Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron also denounced the new missile launch by North Korea and called for the resumption of "direct talks" to address the Korean Peninsula issue during a phone conversation, the Kremlin press service said.

The Asean foreign ministers are scheduled to meet next week in NY and are expected to have a dialogue with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the sidelines of the UN general assembly.

Japan's Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters the missile may have been the intermediate-range Hwasong-12 missile, which has the range to reach the US Pacific territory of Guam.
