Sebastian Vettel plays down being favourite for Spanish GP

Saturday in Singapore. Under the bright lights of Singapore's nighttime Marina Bay Street Circuit, Scuderia Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel took pole position.

Verstappen had led the first session but there was nothing between the two Red Bull drivers.

The German's pole position lap of 1 minute 39.491 seconds is the fastest lap ever around the Singapore circuit, after Ricciardo who as the first one to break the record on Friday with a fastest best of 1 minute 40.

"I love this track, the vehicle was tricky but it came alive and was getting better and better and better as the night progressed, really happy we got it done", said Vettel.

It was not just the qualifying but throughout the weekend Ferrari and Red Bull outpaced Mercedez who were literally flying earlier in the season.

It seems Mercedes have also turned their attentions to Red Bull, having previously installed closest Constructors' Championship challengers Ferrari as the pre-race favourites thanks to their high-downforce advantage.

"From race to race, it's a little bit different between us, but I hope we'll be strong in the races coming up".

"I definitely didn't anticipate Ferrari to be as strong as they were, I thought Red Bull would be as quick as they were".

Clearly mystified, having matched Vettel in the final practice session and outpaced him in Q1 and matched him again in Q2, he admitted when he saw the final lap times, "I don't know where Ferrari have picked up their pace".

"The vehicle should be better tomorrow but it will be a very close race".

A beaming Ricciardo said after practice: "This is pretty expected, I'm not surprised, this is the way I wanted to start the weekend, but nothing is guaranteed". Vandoorne however managed to go fastest for McLaren on 1m44.008s with Alonso not far in third.

"It is a shame we couldn't put it on pole", Verstappen added. "In theory it should be better here than Monza, but I think it will be close". "But we'll see what happens". "I have just got to keep the pressure on the guys in front without overcooking my vehicle". The Spaniard's team-mate followed him by clocking the ninth fastest time, while his Spanish counterpart Carlos Sainz sealed tenth spot, to complete the top 10 of the grid.

Vetttel was expectedly ecstatic after snatching the pole from Red Bull.

Daniil Kvyat did improve on his second run, but only by enough to take 13th ahead of the second Force India of Esteban Ocon.

Renault's Jolyon Palmer will start ahead of the Mexican after missing out on Q3 by the smallest of margins.

Williams driver Felipe Massa was also knocked out in 17th after a hard session.
