The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering unilateral sanctions against Chinese trading companies engaged in crude oil trade with North Korea, according to sources close to the US government.

China fought alongside North Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War, in which Chinese leader Mao Zedong lost his eldest son, and Beijing has always been Pyongyang's chief ally and primary trade partner. "They [the US] should do more to find effective ways to resume dialogue and negotiation".

Ambassador Cui Tiankai on Friday told reporters at an embassy event: "Honestly, I think the United States should be doing ... much more than now, so that there's real effective worldwide co-operation on this issue".

NATO has called for "a global response" to North Korea's ballistic missile tests early on Friday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that North Korea's latest missile test violated United Nations Security Council resolutions, the Interfax news agency reported.

UN Security Council voted unanimously on Monday (Sept 11) to impose a new round of sanctions against North Korea for its sixth nuclear test on Sept 3.

"Our final goal is to establish the equilibrium of real force with the U.S. and make the USA rulers dare not talk about military option", North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was quoted as saying by the state news agency, KCNA.

However, North Korea warned Washington on Monday against a new round of sanctions and said its retaliatory measures "will cause the U.S. the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history".

"China is not to blame for the escalation of tensions", said the spokesperson.

North Korea said on Saturday it aimed to reach an "equilibrium" of military force with the United States after Pyongyang fired a second missile over Japan on Friday.

Polls also show that most Americans disapprove of the president's bellicose approach to the North Korean regime, and fear USA military strikes against the country.
