Visiting Florida, Trump Praises 'Incredible' First Responders, State Officials

Six people have died from a nursing home in Hollywood, Fla., that lost power in the wake of Hurricane Irma, and dozens more had to be evacuated to nearby hospitals.

City officials said eight others died. He will then travel south to Naples, Florida to meet with residents tackling the aftermath of storm, the White House said in a statement. In Coral Gables, an apartment building was evacuated after authorities said its lack of power made it unsafe for elderly tenants.

Fire rescue teams removed 122 people from two assisted-living facilities near Orlando as a safety measure, a fire department spokeswoman said. Many communities there are still cleaning up or without power or air conditioning.

The president says in Fort Myers, Florida, that he hopes Scott "runs for the Senate".

The loss of life at the nursing home in Hollywood, Florida, brought the overall death toll from Irma to 81, with several hard-hit Caribbean islands including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Island, accounting for more than half the fatalities.

Brent Leathwood, a realtor in Sarasota who is originally from Burlington, Ont., said about 80 per cent of his Canadian customers are fully insured even though tougher building codes after hurricane Andrew have helped to minimize damage.

He said FPL works with Broward and all the counties in its territory to plan ahead of hurricane season and find out what facilities should get power first, which is a county decision.

Facing a situation that was out of control, doctors and fire officials ultimately chose to transfer all the patients to the hospital, where dozens were treated for respiratory distress, dehydration and heat exhaustion, officials said.

North Korea Is Pushing Its Limits With The Trump Administration
Dictator Kim Jong-un has repeatedly threatened to attack both Guam and Japan with missiles, possibly using nuclear warheads. Former top White House aide Steve Bannon told a reporter in August that there are no military solutions for North Korea.

Police in Hollywood, north of Miami, opened a criminal investigation on Wednesday after finding three dead patients at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hill, a facility that had been operating with little or no air conditioning.

Exactly how the deaths happened was under investigation, with Sanchez saying authorities have not ruled anything out, including carbon monoxide poisoning from generators. As a precaution, Hollywood police officers were checking on the 42 other assisted-living facilities and nursing homes in the area.

Across the street from the stifling nursing home sat a fully air-conditioned hospital, Memorial Regional.

Craig said nursing home staff had assured her before the storm that they were prepared to safely shelter residents through the hurricane, and were equipped with generators, food and other necessary supplies. Both of her parents are still being treated after the ordeal, but she said she does not know which facility she will place them in when they are discharged soon. "But nobody from the facility has told me anything yet". She said she last heard from her sister two days ago and found out the air conditioning was not working. The medical examiner's office said the victims were five women and three men, ages 70 to 99.

Scott said in a statement earlier this week that he was "heartbroken" to learn of the deaths and planned to "aggressively demand answers".

The state's nursing home association said it tirelessly advocated help for its members before and after the storm.

The Florida Health Care Association depicted those unfortunate deaths as a "profound tragedy within the larger tragedy of Hurricane Irma". County officials released documents showing that the Hollywood facility was in compliance with that regulation and that it held a hurricane drill with its staff in October.

FEMA also said it had moved 3.8 million meals and 3.4 million liters of water to states in the Southeast that were affected by the storm. North Carolina reported its first Irma-related death on Friday after a man died from carbon monoxide poisoning, and two more people died in Florida from the risky fumes, including a woman in Palm Beach County.
